The John Deere 644E Wheel Loader is a 2.5 Cubic Meter Loader.

Key features of the John Deere 644E:

Engine: John Deere 6466T

The engine features replaceable wet type cylinder liners providing superior heat dissipation and longer engine life.  Its high strength alloy heads have replaceable valve inserts. The 5 main bearing crankshaft is statically and dynacmically balanced for smooth operation and is made of forged steel. Finally, heat transfer is provided by cast aluminum pistons sprayed with cooling oil for extended life.

Transmission:
The transmission is a 4 speed forward and 3 speed reverse utilizing a single-stage, single phase torque converter and a countershaft style power shift transmission resulting in smooth and modulated shifts.

Final Drives:
Mounted inboard, the large, heavy-duty, plantetary final drive gears are not restricted by wheel diameter.  The run in a cooling oil bath for a long life and trouble free service.

Differentials:
Exclusive to John Deere is its hyraulic differential lock.  Paired with the convetional front and rear differentials it can be ordered on the front with a conventional differential in the rear.  Alternatively, the operator can order the hyrdaulic lock in both the front and rear resulting in complete control either way. When the differential is engaged it provides a complete 100 percent lock of the affected wheels, resuling in same speed turning, giving maximum traction to pull through slippery spots and for faster loading.

Brakes:
The brakes are wet disc brakes bathed in cooling oil.  They are hydraulic acutated, self-adjusting, self-equalizing, and require no periodic service.  The parking brake is a foot-operated expanding shoe attached to the transmission output shaft.  Optionally, a front axle disconnect is available for loaders driven over long distances.

Steering:
The 644E steering system provides full power steering at all speeds through the 80 degree steering arc, resulting in low effort and smooth control at any engine rpm.
