A Telehandler is a machine used in the agriculture industry to move loads to and from places that are out of reach for a regular forklift. Telehandlers are known as a Telescopic Handler. They work very similar to a forklift. The main difference is that Telehandlers have a single boom that extends outwards and upwards from the body of the vehicle. On the end of the boom the operator can attach one of several attachments, such as a bucket, pallet forks, muck grab, or lift table.
The advantage of having a single boom that can extend the way a Telehandler, is that they can reach places much higher and at distances that forklifts cant. The disadvantage of Telehandlers is that they can be very unstable. The farther the boom is extended the more unstable it is and has a chance for tipping over. This is the same for heavy weight that is placed on the end of the boom. To help resolve this problem there are counterweights in the rear to stabilize the equipment. The operator is equipped with a load chart which helps him determine whether a given task is possible, taking into account weight, boom angle and height.
Matbro pioneered the Telehandler in Surrey, England and developed them from their articulated cross country forestry forklifts. At first they had a centrally mounted boom on the front section, with the driver's cab on the rear section. Newer models are designed with rigid chassis and a rear mounted boom with the cab to the side of the machine. This new design has become much more popular then the old design.
