A scissor lift is a machine with a platform that moves up and down a vertical plane. To move up the vertical plane, the machine has folding supports that expand or contract in a criss-cross or "X" pattern. When pressure is applied to the outside of the lowest set of supports, the lift moves upwards extending the criss-cross pattern. And to lower the lift, that pressure is released causing the criss-cross pattern to compress.
Hydraulics, pneumatic or mechanical are ways to power the lift. Most use hydraulics because the decent of the platform requires no power at all, just a simple release of hydraulic or pneumatic pressure.
