Trail King began in 1974 when Gordon and Shirley Thomsen who founded Western Ag Sales purchased Plains Industries. Western Ag expanded their initial line to include trailers with many enhanced features to meet customers' hauling needs, such as hydraulic tails and detachable goosenecks. Then, in 1983, Western Ag officially changed its name to Trail King Industries.
In June of 1995, Trail King was acquired as a Carlisle company. Carlisle is composed of three operating segments: Construction Materials, General Industry, and Transportation Products. Carlisle Companies, Inc. employs over 11,000 people in nine operating companoes around the world.
Trail King developed an expanded porduct line to inlcude trailers not only for cunstruction-related applications, but also cater to the needs of the Commercial and Specialized Hauling markets as well. In 1995 Trail King acquired the assets of Ti-Brook, Inc. This brought a new Materials Hauling dimesnion to Trail King's product line
Trail King offers one of the most complete lines of trailers in the U.S. both Open Deck trailers and Materials Hauling trailers. Trail King's trailers can range in capacity from 6,000 pounds to 1,000,000 pounds. The Open Deck category includes Commercial, Construction, and Specialized trailers, featuring Double Drop, Flatbed, Commercial HDG (Hydraulic Detachable Gooseneck), MG (Mechanical Gooseneck), Advantage HST (Hydraulic Sliding Tail), Custom HDG, Tile, Tag, Utility, Advantage SA (Hydraulic Sliding Axle), Folding Gooseneck, MDGE (Mechanical Detachable Gooseneck Expando), Jeeps, Rollback, Drop Dech Extendable, and Mulit-Axle Trailers (Hydraulic or Mechanical Detachable Gooseneck) Trailers. The Materials Hauling category includes Five Star Live Bottom, Super Hi-Lite Live Bottom, Pneumatic Dry Bulk (Advantage APB), Advantage Bottom Dump, Steel Half Round, SHR-Q (Steel Half Round Quarter Frame), Steel Side Dump, Construction Live Bottom, Construction OLB (Over-the-fifth-wheel Live Bottom), UnltraLite Bottom Dump, Tipper Trailers, Transfer Trailers, Aluminum Dump Bodies, TiLite End Dump, and "1033" Pneumatic Dry Bulk (Advantage APB) Trailers.
