Bobcat Equipment Company established itself in 1947 under the name Melroe Manufacturing Company and it began as a manufacturer of construction and farm equipment. Its headquarters are based in North Dakota but the company was bought by the larger Doosan Infracore in 2007.
Under the Bobcat name brand, the company sells compact excavators, compact utility vehicles, compact tractors, other small hydraulic equipment, and is most known for its skid steer loaders.
The 'Bobcat' name was introduced on the M-400 in 1960 as the dictionary definition of the animal described it as "quick, tough, and agile" which suited the small loader well.
In fact, the name 'Bobcat' has become synonymous with any skid steer loader. While this usage is incorrect, it solidifies the Bobcat brand as an industry leader in equipment manufacturing and sales.
